UNIT 1, Part 2: Introducing a novel into The American Dream

“Few people know so clearly what they want. Most people can’t even think what to hope for when they throw
a penny in a fountain,” –Barbara Kingsolver
The importance of incorporating The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver, is to show how the elements of the American Dream can be exemplified through pieces of literature. Through moments of despair and through cries of excitement, this book asks the question, “Can an unplanned life still be the right one for us?”

Throughout this unit, we will continue to work on our American Dream essay. With each lesson, we will be working with them to correct and continue to improve your papers. At the end of the reading, you will turn in a final draft, which will incorporate the characters of The Bean Trees to what you have already written.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

1.      Is it our responsibility to nurture and help those in need?
2.      Does wanting to give up when life gets hard make us “Bad Americans”?
